Audition
Membership in the Manassas Chorale is open to high school and adult singers from the greater Manassas area. The Chorale performs four concerts per season; auditions are held at the start of the rehearsal segment for each concert.
Prospective singers are welcome to visit "open rehearsals" on the dates listed below, and then audition for the Artistic Director and a local vocal coach. Singers will be notified within 24 hours of their results, and those who receive 80 or more points out of 100 are invited to join the Chorale and may then pay dues, purchase concert music, and order performance attire.
AUDITION CHECKLIST
- Choose a selection to sing - you may sing the Star Spangled Banner if you do not have a prepared piece. A Broadway tune, choir anthem, hymn, or patriotic song is appropriate.
- Have at least two copies of your audition piece with you. The Star Spangled Banner will be provided upon request if you do not have a prepared piece.
- Be prepared to study an 8-measure sight-singing example for 45 seconds, and then sing it to the best of your ability. A starting pitch and sense of key feeling will be provided.
- Be prepared to listen to two short ear-training examples played on the piano and then sing them back based on the notes/rhythms heard.
- Scores will be given for Tonal Accuracy (Correct Pitches), Rhythmic Accuracy (Note Values and Rests), Phrasing (Legato/Staccato), Interpretation/Mood/Style/Dynamics, Sight-singing (from example provided), Ear Training (singing back a played example), Music Marked Correctly, and Stage Presence.
- The director will determine your vocal range by vocalizing up to your highest note and down to your lowest note. This is a range check only and no point values are involved.
